(The
Valley, Anguilla) - Personnel from the
Department of Fisheries and Marine Resources (DFMR) have
recently completed a three day training exercise in the
installation of Helix Mooring Anchors. The training was
part of a larger project, ‘Enhancing Marine Protected Areas
Management in Anguilla' - currently being administered by
the Anguilla National Trust and funded by the British
Government’s Overseas Territories Environment Programme (OTEP).
The training was facilitated by Mr Dave Merrill of
www.Boatmoorings.com,
a pioneer who first introduced the Helix Anchor mooring
system to the marine community more than 15 years ago.
The Helix
Anchor is more environmentally friendly than most mooring
anchors, and has a longer lifespan and more holding power
than the Manta Ray Anchor currently being used by the many
boats visiting Anguilla’s Marine Parks. As such, the DFMR
has plans to gradually install a number of these Helix
Anchors, especially in areas such as Little Bay where a
number of the Manta Ray Anchors have been pulled out from
the bottom substrate.
Three
Helix Anchors were installed during the training – one at
Sandy Island and two at Little Bay.
