Much has been said about Anguilla's beaches
but words, no matter the author, cannot do justice to the actual
experience. What most people hear about is the brilliantly white sand that
is found on beaches which impress in breath and length in areas such as
Shoal Bay East and Maunday's Bay. However, what I found to be just as
attractive was the sugar-grain sand at Mead's Bay
which in some areas was speckled with pink and yellow or in the southern
corner of Savannah Bay where the sand is as pink as the beaches in some
parts of the Bahamas, world renowned for it's "Pink
Sand" beaches. Separated by a few feet from Savannah Bay is an area known as
Little Bay, known by East-Enders for the sea life found in the corals and
reefs in the area.
Fishing has always been apart of the life of
the inhabitants of Anguilla, from Arawak to African and European.
Beaches such as Island Harbour,
Sile Bay, Sandy Hill, and
The Cove
are some areas where you'll find locally built fishing boats which work
diligently in support of their owners.
Sandy Ground is the official port of Entry to
Anguilla for foreign boats and trading ships as well as being a
fishing port and boat racing arena. At any point, one will find a
beautiful array of vessels in the harbour. Views from South Hill are
beautiful with the Road Pond and North Hill in the background while views
from North Hill offer South Hill and St. Martin as a backdrop.
August 01 - August 10 and a few other days in
the year some of the beaches become home to a passionate sport
that resembles regattas in that boats race, but are truly best termed
"Anguillian Boat Races". Passion, strange rules, and fights
to the finish at sea, while hundreds walk the beaches eating drinking,
talking, laughing and just having fun is truly a wonderful
experience.
